noShorts

Your social apps, without the endless short videos.

noShorts opens Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X with Reels, Shorts, Spotlight and the For You feed taken out. Messages, posts and the video a friend sends you still work.

Get it on GitHub Free and open source. For iPhone, iOS 17 or later.

The noShorts home screen, listing Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X with a note under each saying which feeds are hidden.

What disappears

Each feed has its own switch, so you decide how much goes. Your own feed, stories, messages, search and normal videos stay.

Instagram
Reels, the Explore grid, suggested posts
YouTube
Shorts, home feed recommendations, Up next suggestions
TikTok
For You, Explore, Live, the Following and Friends feeds
Snapchat
Spotlight
Facebook
Reels, the Video tab
X
The swipe-up video feed, Explore and trends

A video from a friend still plays. Open a reel, a Short or a TikTok that someone sent you and it plays. You just can't swipe on to the next one.

How it works

No app on an iPhone can reach inside Instagram or TikTok and switch a feed off. So noShorts opens each network's own website for you and removes the feeds there.

  1. Open noShorts instead. Pick a network on the home screen. It loads inside the app, full screen.
  2. Sign in once. You sign in on the network's own page, the same way you would in Safari. noShorts never sees your password.
  3. Use it as usual. The short-video tabs and feeds are gone, and links to them lead back to your start page.

Help with the habit

Two optional extras for the moments your thumb goes to the old icon on its own.

Nothing leaves your iPhone

noShorts has no account, no server and no analytics. Your logins stay between you and the network, and your settings stay on the device. You can read the privacy policy, and the code is public, so you can check.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase and no advertising, and the source code is open under the MIT licence.

Does it change the Instagram or YouTube app I already have?

No, and nothing on an iPhone can. noShorts is a separate place to open those networks. The official apps stay as they are unless you choose to block them with Screen Time.

Why do I have to sign in again?

noShorts loads the networks' websites, and those keep their own login, separate from the official apps. You sign in once per network and stay signed in.

Why do TikTok and Snapchat look like a desktop site?

Their phone websites push you to the app: TikTok's has no messages and won't play a video link, and Snapchat's web client is only offered to desktop browsers. noShorts asks for the desktop version so these work, which makes them more cramped than the others.

A feed came back. What happened?

The networks change their pages often, and a rule can stop matching. Reload the page first. If the feed is still there, please open an issue so the rule can be updated.

Will I get notifications?

No. The websites can't send notifications through noShorts. If you rely on them, keep the official app's notifications on and open the conversation here.
